The Kingdom of France was one of medieval Europe’s largest and most powerful states. At the onset of the high period, the myriad French dukes and counts eagerly embraced the feudalist system which allowed them to prosper from lands worked by lower classes and shore up their own authority and power. However the rapid development of settlements which such an arrangement invited eventually made the position these lords had carved out for themselves untenable: the monarchy and the townspeople were natural allies against corrupt nobles and grasping patricians, an affinity which was further reinforced by the church’s practice of anointing kings as God’s chosen agents on earth. The sympathies of both the populace and the Vatican ultimately enabled the monarchy to establish firm control of the Île-de-France, which became a seat from which the French king could project power elsewhere. The next several centuries saw an expansion and consolidation of royal power in the kingdom, despite constant threats from other European states, notably England and Germany. By 1300, France was the most powerful and well-respected state in Europe. The kingdom’s newfound footing was not to last, however; in the coming centuries it was to be devastated by calamitous wars and the outbreak of the Black Death, which eviscerated its population and sapped France of its strength. It would be hundreds of years before the French population recovered to 14th century levels. In the middle ages, the Kingdom of France was both a shining example of raw feudalism and, paradoxically, an example to all of Europe regarding the potential of a state with strong, centralized institutions. It should be no wonder that while the Kingdom is lost to history, the state of France remains with us to this day.
